PROFILE

Mario joined Brazeau Seller Law as an associate in 2017 after completing the summer student and articling programs with the firm. As part of our employment law group, he assists both employers and employees across various industries in ensuring that they understand their rights and obligations. He acts on wrongful dismissal claims, human rights proceedings, employment standards proceedings, and restrictive covenant litigation. Mario also advises clients with respect to employment agreements and employee entitlements upon termination of employment.

Mario’s skill set, and that he was born in Costa Rica and lived for a time in Guatemala, makes him well positioned to assist clients with interests in Latin America. He can communicate fluently, both orally and in writing, in English and Spanish.

Mario has experience working on legal matters in several Latin American countries and he has assisted Canadian companies entering markets in Latin America. He also assists Latin American clients with legal matters in Canada. Through our affiliation with Meritas, Mario has direct access to a network of lawyers across Latin America, and throughout the world.  He is also the Co-Chair of the Meritas Americas Cannabis Practice Group.

In addition, Mario was the Co-Director and Exchange Coordinator of a project under the Canada-Colombia Agreement on Labour Cooperation (a parallel agreement to the Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the Republic of Colombia). The project resulted in a study influenced by the bi-lateral exchange of high-level labour relations stakeholders from both countries. The study was published by the University of Ottawa in December 2022.

Mario studied at the University of Victoria, where he graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, with honours and distinction. He earned a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies at Columbia University in 2013, and a Juris Doctor degree (cum laude) at the University of Ottawa in 2016.
