PROFILE
As a member of our litigation team, Avery strives to provide her clients with practical, tailored legal advice and representation in disputes related to the validity of wills, the administration of estates, the conduct of guardians or attorneys for property and personal care, and the fiduciary obligations of adult children. Avery assists:
- Trustees accused of improperly managing estate assets;
- Beneficiaries of an estate concerned with the actions or lack of action on the part of the estate trustee;
- Former beneficiaries impacted by a change to a will made when the individual was ill, under another’s influence, or not capable of making decisions about their estate;
- Family members who have not been considered in the deceased’s estate planning, including unmarried and common law partners, married spouses, and those who were financially dependent on the deceased;
- Attorneys and guardians of property accused of improperly managing an incapable individual’s assets;
- Family members of an incapable person concerned with the actions of an attorney or guardian of property or personal care;
Parents and adult children questioning the management of assets held by the adult child, including concerns about the adult child taking money belonging to the parent.
Before joining Brazeau Seller Law, Avery worked at other Ottawa firms in the areas of estate litigation and civil litigation. She also worked as in-house counsel for a non-profit organization, where she assisted healthcare providers with legal issues arising from their professional practice. Before attending law school, Avery worked in clinical research and project management at a pediatric hospital and its affiliated research institute.
Outside of the office, Avery is passionate about athletic pursuits and community involvement. Avery can often be found running Ottawa’s path systems, cycling in Gatineau Park, or at a rock-climbing gym. She sits on the board of directors for the Centre for Treatment of Sexual Abuse and Childhood Trauma, volunteers as a coach with the Ottawa Triathlon Club, and routinely returns to her alma mater to judge moot court competitions.
